“We want to be those who recognise the unchanging truth of the good news of Jesus – while also seeking to be creative and innovative in finding fresh ways to help people connect with God and grow in their faith. The new wine of the Kingdom needs new wine skins and we seek to be open to all that God wants to do in us and through us – even when that requires change.”

Key Verse

“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.” 1 Cor 9:22

The foundational truths of our Christian faith and practice as revealed in the Word of God are not going to change. We do, however, live in an ever changing culture and so we have a responsibility to keep thinking of fresh and impacting ways to share our faith which will connect with those we meet.

We only need to look at Jesus and His teachings to see that he was constantly looking to explain Kingdom principles in ways which related to the everyday life and experience of those He was with. He used stories about fishing and farming – which made sense to His listeners, but which may not connect in the same way with many people living in urban Northampton.

The Apostle Paul realised that in order to share the good news of Jesus effectively he needed to think about his audience, their current culture and belief systems, their upbringing and past experiences. To those who had been brought up in Jewish culture, he would use His own Jewish heritage and knowledge to point to Jesus as Messiah. In Athens, when he met with some Greek Philosophers who worshipped many gods, he commended them for their quest for truth and used an altar which they had left for an ‘Unknown god’ to start a conversation about the one true God, creator of all things.

At Broadmead we want to hold on firmly to unchanging truth, but be fresh, creative, innovative and culturally relevant in how we seek to share our faith with others. This may mean that over time, we change how and when we do certain things – so that we can reach as many people as we can with the message of the Father’s love, Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection, forgiveness, new life, the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit and God’s heart to love, heal and restore.
