Key Verse

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Matthew 6:12

We want to honour all that Christ accomplished for us on the cross through his death and resurrection. We have been forgiven much and seek to extend forgiveness, grace and mercy to others in His name.

Forgiveness is the deliberate act of pardoning somebody without harbouring anger or resentment and scripture clearly deals with two types of forgiveness. God’s pardon for our sins and our obligation to forgive others. So let us first consider the former.

Everyone of us needs forgiveness because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In other words, we have missed the mark, not acted as God wants us to and been less than God wants us to be. We receive forgiveness from God by belief, confession and repentance through the work done on the cross by Jesus.

There are no limits to God’s forgiveness of our wrong doing and when God offers his forgiveness it is for our sins past, present and future, although it is important that we keep short accounts with God through the act of repentance. We know we are forgiven because it has been promised and guaranteed by God Himself, who is faithful and just. So we can therefore say with confidence, I am forgiven.

However, this is only part of the story. As Jesus reminds us in the parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:21-35) there are consequences for us if having received God’s amazing forgiveness we don’t pass it on to others. We see in the Lord’s Prayer the request to help us to forgive others. Now, of course, this is not always easy and certainly some of us have been very badly hurt in the past.

However, each of us needs to move towards a place where we can offer forgiveness to others without conditions attached. We simply can’t wait until they say sorry or until the pain goes away. We might still be suffering the consequences of the hurt but we need to be able to release forgiveness to others and continue to daily walk in that forgiveness.

Releasing forgiveness also releases us as well. We can be easily held captive by our unforgiveness of others and is not what God has for us. To do this we have to place ourselves in the hands of our Heavenly Father in whom we find forgiveness and the power to forgive others.
